# Using Your Own Domain (Custom Domain)

You can reach your hosted UniFi Network controller at your own domain name (for example `unifi.example.com`) instead of the `pXXX.cloudunifi.com` hostname we assign you. TLS certificates are issued automatically.

## Adding a custom domain

1. In your domain registrar's DNS panel, add a **CNAME** record for the name you want to use, pointing at your assigned hostname (`pXXX.cloudunifi.com`, or `xxxxxx.netconsole.cloud` if your controller has been migrated to UniFi OS). Use a CNAME rather than an A record — if we ever move your controller, your domain keeps working.
2. Wait for DNS to propagate (usually minutes, up to 48 hours).
3. In the [customer portal](https://portal.cloudunifi.com), open your service, go to the **Custom Domain** section, enter the domain and click **Add Domain**. The certificate is issued within a couple of minutes.

Plans P15–P50 include one custom domain; P75 and above can add several.

## Changing your custom domain

!!!danger Read this before removing or replacing a domain
Your controller tells every UniFi device which address to check in with — the **inform host**. If your inform host is your custom domain and you remove that domain, every access point, switch and gateway that has not yet picked up a new address is **immediately disconnected** and will show *Unable to resolve* or *Adopting* until the domain is added back. On a large deployment that can be hundreds of devices across many sites.
!!!

Because of this, the portal will **not let you remove a domain that is currently your controller's inform host**. It is marked with an **Inform host** badge in the Custom Domain section.

Change domains in this order:

1. **Add the new domain first** (see above) if you are switching to a different name. Wait for it to show as *Active*.
2. In UniFi Network, open **Settings → System → Advanced** and set **Inform Host** (the *Override Inform Host* option) to the domain you are keeping. Apply the change.
3. **Wait until every site shows all devices connected.** Devices pick up the new inform host on their next check-in — usually within a few minutes. Devices that are offline only update when they come back online, so if some sites have powered-down equipment, wait for them.
4. Return to the portal and **remove the old domain**. The badge will have moved to the new domain and the Remove button will be available.

If you skip a step the portal shows a message explaining what is still in use; nothing is changed until the order above is followed.

!!!warning Only one domain on your plan?
If your plan allows a single custom domain you cannot add the new one first. Set **Inform Host** to your assigned CloudUniFi hostname (`pXXX.cloudunifi.com` / `xxxxxx.netconsole.cloud`) instead, wait for all devices to reconnect, remove the old domain, add the new one, and then point **Inform Host** at the new domain.
!!!

## Removing a custom domain

Follow the same order as above: move the inform host away from the domain, wait for all devices to reconnect, then remove the domain in the portal. The assigned CloudUniFi hostname always stays available and cannot be removed.

## Need help?

If you are unsure which address your devices are using, or you need a domain removed urgently, contact support through the web chat before making changes — we can check the live device state for you.
