Connecting Devices to Your UISP
Devices connect to UISP by name. Use your UISP address, never an IP, and your devices keep working for the life of your service.
Use the hostname, not an IP
Your UISP address, yourname.netconsole.cloud, is yours for as long as you have the service. The IP address behind it belongs to the server your UISP runs on and can change when we move or rebuild servers. A device that was pointed at an IP would then lose contact; a device pointed at the hostname does not notice.
Every device setting that refers to your UISP, including the UISP key, should therefore use yourname.netconsole.cloud (or your own custom domain once it is set up).
Adding a device
- In UISP, open Settings, then Devices, then Devices Adoption and copy the UISP key: your UISP address plus a secret your devices share.
- On the device, open its UISP settings (called UNMS on older firmware) and paste the key. On airMAX and airFiber this is in the device's web interface; on an EdgeRouter it is in the UISP section of its web interface.
- The device appears in UISP as "connected" within a minute or two.
For a UISP Console or UISP-R, follow the setup in the UISP mobile app; it registers itself with your UISP address.
Firmware
UISP downloads device firmware from Ubiquiti on demand and pushes it to your devices from the UISP interface. Keep devices on firmware Ubiquiti lists as compatible with your UISP version; UISP warns you when a device is too old to be managed.
NetFlow
UISP shows traffic statistics per client and per site when a router exports NetFlow to it. Your service has its own NetFlow collector: the address and UDP port are shown on your service page in the customer portal, and they also appear in your welcome email.
- EdgeRouter. In UISP, open Settings, then Network, choose + Add new gateway and turn on Allow NetFlow. UISP writes the NetFlow configuration to the router for you, pointing it at your collector address and port. You do not type the port anywhere.
- UISP Console and UISP-R. Turn on Allow NetFlow on the gateway, and list the subnets you want measured in UISP's network settings. With no subnet listed, no traffic is recorded.
- Other routers. Any router that can export NetFlow version 5 or 9 can send to
yourname.netconsole.cloudon your collector port over UDP. Use the hostname here too.
Statistics appear within a few minutes of the first export. If the gateway shows traffic but UISP does not, check that the router sees your UISP at the same address UISP wrote to it.
